Life just got a lot more interesting for youngsters in Westmoreland County and surrounding areas. Fun Slides Carpet Skatepark and Party Center recently opened its doors as the carpet skating party spot. Located at 1553 Arona Road in Irwin, it is just over a mile from Route 30. Kids can now say goodbye to boredom for this summer and throughout the year!
Fun Slides Carpet Skatepark and Party Center is the first of its kind. Creator Don "Smokey" Edwards improvised his family concept of EZ Moves Furniture Slides to create a fun new sport for kids of all ages, including adults. EZ Moves are the handy furniture movers that slide under any piece of furniture to help glide it across the floor. Edwards and his family own and manufacture the EZ Moves in North Huntingdon.
It was inevitable that one day the EZ Moves would end up under someone's foot to slide around on the floor. Don worked on the concept and redesigned the mover to fit a foot. Next, he added straps. From there the skates were tested out at trade shows and the response to the new style of skating has been a complete success. Fun Slides are no longer something just for Don's warehouse employees to have fun doing. Now it is open to the public and the slides are available for rental or for purchase.
The concept of EZ Moves all began in the early 1990s when Don was a carpet installer. From there new ideas kept evolving over the years including the idea of the Fun Slides, which simply was named because it was "fun" to "slide" on the carpet with the movers.
The idea to open a skate area came to fruition two years ago when Don purchased the building for the EZ Moves warehouse. However, the 10,000-foot facility was more than what was needed. That is when the Edwards thought about making it into a Carpet Skatepark for the Fun Slides. The EZ Moves business is family owned so Don did not have to look far for a business partner, his mother Loretta. He and his family now operate and run both businesses. While the schedule may be demanding, it is a welcome challenge to see these local, family-owned enterprises become a thriving reality.
"Everyone that has been here keeps telling us that this is exactly what the area has needed!" said Candy Holsing, sales and marketing manager for Fun Slides Carpet Skatepark (and sister to owner Don) Opening day for the skatepark was June 25, 2011. Maximum capacity is 150 and the Edwards can see that happening soon as word spreads about the skatepark.
The best part of Fun Slides is how easy it is to use them. People strap the correct size Fun Slide directly under their shoe. Helmets are recommended for children seven and under for safety reasons. The entire arena is carpeted in neon orange, green, and purple and the addition of black lights and music add even more excitement to the experience.
"It is so easy. We say the learning curve is in minutes," said Candy. When people first put the slides on they can enter the novice room to learn how to move around. Once they feel confident, they can move into other rooms where there are ramps, guard rails, and jumps. In addition, there are skate instructors in all areas to help people who may need some guidance.
Unlike roller skates and ice skates, people are more confident with Fun Slides because the surface in completely flat. There is more control and if a person does fall...the surface is carpeted.
While the risk of injury is very low, each skater is required to sign a waiver stating that they understand the rules of the arena and will skate safely. Waivers can be found online at www.funslidespark.com or at Fun Slides Skatepark.
All Fun Slides can be rented for $2.00 per person and can be purchased for $15.00. Sizes range from toddler size 4 up to an adult 14. All shoes must have a closed toe and need to remain on to secure the Fun Slide. Tennis shoes are the preferred choice. Also, white clothing or fluorescent green, orange, or yellow are perfect colors to wear because they will glow in the black light.
Refreshments are available such as Gatorade, sodas, candy, snacks, and various black light accessories and makeup. Helmets can also be rented for $1.00. However, there are no restrictions on the type of helmet, so bike helmets are perfectly acceptable.
Public skate sessions are in two-hour time frames. Hours of operation are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from (CLOSED JULY 2–3) 11am-1pm 1:30-3:30pm; 4-6pm; and 6:30-8:30pm. Hours on Wednesday and Thursday are from 3:30-5:30pm.
